ZARA LARSON, CUCUMBERS & FRENCH FRIES: NOW TRENDING
What is happening in the world (wild) web this week? We The People’s resident culture strategist Lena Tuck digs a little deeper into the emerging trends capturing her attention this week.
FIRSTLY, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT SYMPHONY BY ZARA LARSON
This trend was popping off about 2-weeks ago and at first it was highlighting our unhinged behaviours. Now it’s morphed into its own beast, the original singer Zara Larsson herself turned this into a marketing masterclass by jumping on the trend herself and made it her own - adding dolphins and rainbows to her live shows. This is a perfect example of a celebrity jumping on a trend in a reactive, authentic way regardless of media training.
So… how can a brand adopt this? This trend is essentially TikTok in a nutshell, the combination of a cutesy background, upbeat music, with something you would only tell your bestie when you’re 6 margaritas deep. This is the perfect opportunity to show up not as a brand but to appear as a person or generic creator to bait your audience and gain new followers.
WHEN YOUR JOB/CAR DOESN’T MATCH YOUR AESTHETIC
For service-based brands this is a great one to jump on. It shows you’re self-aware, understand your audience and you’re not afraid to show some humour.
CUCUMBERS ARE SELLING OUT
Our man @logan is responsible for a global shortage of cucumbers but my lord is he still delivering on the content. His cucumber recipes have caused Aussie brand @mingleseasonings to sell out Australia-wide of their Everything Bagel seasoning.
So… how can brands adopt this?
We haven’t seen brands use in an original way - this creator adopted it to fit ‘a parmesan cheese mac n cheese recipe - but why aren’t beauty brands, fashion brands, food and beverage brands jumping on this!? Now is your time.
WHEN THERE’S FRIES ON THE TABLE…
A subtle way to use a product video content without a hard sell. Perfect for food brands to adopt in a funny, light-hearted way, also a good way to introduce members of the team to your audience - if that’s your vibe.
THIS AND YAP
One for the girlies. An aesthetic single shot of your perfect scenario with text on screen, Charli XCX playing with 3 simple words ‘this and yap’, we see this working well with food and beauty brands particularly.
